Summary
Intelligent Logistics includes data related to package dimensions. There are several scenarios in which knowledge of package dimensions can be useful while using billing applications to view invoice data.
Introduction / Terms Defined
- Shipper Reported Dimensions: the reported dimensions at the time of customer label generation and shipping.
- Carrier Reported Dimensions: the actual package dimensions recorded by the carrier when scanned at their facility.
- Dimensional Weight: reflects a package's density, which is the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.
- Dimensional (Dim) Rated: logistics carriers take into account the actual weight and dimensional weight of a package. When a package is Dimensional Rated, it means the carrier determined the dimensional weight was greater than the actual weight, and so the customer is billed for the dimensional weight.
Example in which a package is Dimensional Rated:
If a customer ships a 1 lb box of feathers in a 12x12x12 box, the carrier will charge the dimensional weight of the package compared to the actual weight. Dimensional weight is calculated by multiplying the dimensions of the shipment and dividing the total by the dim divisor. The standard ground dim divisor in the industry is 139, however some customers may have a different number. Please check with your carrier rep to confirm.
- 12x12x12 box of feathers = 1,728
- 1,728 / 139 = 12.43 dimensional weight
Since the dimensional weight of 12.43 lbs in this scenario is greater than the actual weight of 1 lb, the customer will be charged for the dimensional weight of 12.43 lbs to ship this box of feathers.
Billing Solution
To view package dimensions with corresponding invoice data, enter the Invoice Item Summary app.
To view dimension data in the table, press the settings icon to alter the table's column data display.
Once in the user is in the settings, options are available to select the Carrier Reported Dimensions and/or Shipper Reported Dimensions to add to the table data display. The user can also elect to see whether a package was Dimensional Rated.
Select the desired data points from the list and click OK.
After pressing Go to run the updated data set, the user can now see the package dimensions for a specific invoice or tracking unit listed in the table.
To filter by packages that were "Dimensional Rated," click on the Adapt Filters button and select the Dimensional Rated filter. From the filter drop-down, select Yes, and then click Go to run the data.
Tracking Solution
To view package dimensions with corresponding tracking data, enter the Tracking Summary app.
To view dimension data in the table, press the Settings button to alter the table's column data display.
Once in the user is in the settings, they can select either the Carrier Reported Dimensions or Shipper Reported Dimensions to add to the table data display.
After pressing Go to run the updated data set, the user can now see the package dimensions for a specific tracking unit listed in the table.
